Happy Mid-Autumn! 5 places to take your dog in Hong Kong in 2026

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival from all of us at DogDogHK — and from Missy and Muffin! We hope your evening brings good company, something delicious for the humans and a lovely long sniff for the dogs. Thank you for making Hong Kong a little more welcoming for our four-legged family members.

This year, Mid-Autumn falls on Friday, 25 September 2026. Our pick is a harbour walk followed by a small lantern picnic: West Kowloon for a proper evening out, or the nearest pet-friendly waterfront for an easy hour together. Bring a battery lantern, a mat and your dog’s usual treats. There is no need to cross the city to make it special.

Where to go this Mid-Autumn

These are places with published pet access, suitable for planning an outing over 25–27 September. They are not all hosting lantern displays. Hours below are the usual published hours; temporary closures and festival crowd controls can change access.

1. West Kowloon Art Park: our picnic pick

Take a mat, find a space away from the busiest paths and make the harbour your backdrop. The lawns and promenade welcome pets; WestK identifies the double-gated Pet Zone as its only off-leash area. Clip the lead back on before leaving it. Restaurants and indoor venues have their own rules. WestK pet guide.

There is extra activity this weekend: Culture Plus lists WestK Picnic Fest on 25–27 September, 2–9pm. Treat that as a crowd-planning note: we could not verify event-specific dog access directly with WestK. Check the organiser’s event page before entering any festival area or booking an activity.

Our plan: a late-afternoon sniff, then a short picnic as the lights come on. If music or crowds bother your dog, keep moving to a quieter permitted section. West Kowloon park guide.

2. East Coast Park Precinct: a short harbour escape

The North Point/Fortress Hill waterfront precinct has a promenade, lawn, seating and an accessible breakwater. The Harbourfront Commission explicitly welcomes pets on leads and lists round-the-clock access. The open harbour setting makes this an appealing place to pause and look at the evening sky. Our plan: a short stroll and a bench stop, with your lantern beside you. You do not need to reach the end of the breakwater; turn back if the path is crowded or the wind makes the stop uncomfortable.

3. Belcher Bay Promenade: sunset and a lantern break

At Shing Sai Road, Kennedy Town, this waterfront has a boardwalk, sheltered seating, toilets and a pet corner. The official site confirms 24-hour access and welcomes leashed pets in the shared space; free play belongs inside the pet corner. Official venue details.

Our plan: arrive for the evening light, have a gentle walk, then settle for a lantern photo. Its western harbour view makes sunset the main attraction; do not expect the rising moon to appear straight ahead over the water. Belcher Bay guide.

4. Cha Kwo Ling Promenade: the East Kowloon option

LCSD lists designated areas of Cha Kwo Ling Promenade, at Wai Yip Street, as an Inclusive Park for Pets open 24 hours. That qualification matters: follow the signs rather than treating every playground or landscaped area as dog access. Keep your dog on a lead. LCSD’s Kwun Tong pet-area list.

Our plan: stay on the permitted waterfront route and choose a stopping point clear of play areas. Bring water and your own bowl. For a first visit, arrive before dark so you can see the entrances and pet-area boundaries.

5. Tsuen Wan Park: keep the celebration local

If you live in the western New Territories, Tsuen Wan Park, 59 Wing Shun Street, is a practical alternative to travelling into town. LCSD lists it as an Inclusive Park for Pets, open 24 hours, with toilets and a pet garden. Keep the lead on in the shared park and follow the separate pet-garden signs. LCSD’s Tsuen Wan list.

Our plan: a familiar walk followed by a small family gathering where there is room to sit without blocking the path. For a dog who finds busy festivals overwhelming, a short outing close to home is our first choice. Tsuen Wan pet-garden guide.

When should we look for the moon?

The Observatory gives 5:20pm on 25 September and 5:54pm on 26 September as moonrise times, in Hong Kong time. Buildings, hills and clouds can delay your first view. The exact full moon is at 12:49am on Sunday, 27 September — there is no need to keep your dog out that late to enjoy a round-looking moon. HKO’s 2026 moon-watching guide.

Check the latest weather forecast before leaving. A cloudy evening can still be a good dog walk; if conditions are unpleasant, bring the lantern celebration home.

What about the big lantern carnival?

The 2026 LCSD programme includes Victoria Park and the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza. We could not confirm pet admission to these event areas from the programme page. Do not assume a nearby pet garden or promenade grants entry to the displays. For an evening with your dog, choose one of the confirmed pet-access places above unless the organiser confirms otherwise.

Pack light, plan the way home

• Bring water, a bowl, waste bags, a lead and a small mat. Keep human mooncakes for the humans and pack your dog’s usual treats separately.
• Use a battery lantern, keep its batteries and handle out of chewing reach, and take all decorations home.
• Arrange a pet taxi or confirm with your driver that they accept your dog, including its size. Book the return journey too. Ordinary MTR services are not a general pet transport option; the Light Rail pet scheme is separate and does not cover the rest of the railway network.
• If dinner is part of the plan, use our dog-friendly restaurant directory and call the exact branch about dog seating and holiday availability.
