Adopting a dog from SPCA Hong Kong: fees, centres and steps
Meet dogs at four SPCA centres; budget HK$2,100 for one dog with new annual membership, plus a refundable HK$2,000 desexing deposit if needed.
Meet the dog before you commit to the paperwork. SPCA adoption is an in-person match, and it may take more than one visit. First confirm that your home allows dogs. Then check SPCA’s current dogs and go to a centre with the people who live with you, including any helper who will care for the dog. New arrivals may take up to 24 hours to appear online, so the website is a starting point, not the whole kennel.

Existing members do not pay a second joining fee. The deposit is refunded after proof of desexing; the surgery is compulsory. A family annual membership is HK$450 instead of HK$300, making this example HK$2,250. Check SPCA’s current fees and terms before visiting.1

All four centres list dogs among their adoption animals. Choose one your whole household can visit and return to. Call before travelling, especially on public holidays or to meet a particular dog; advertised hours and which dogs are on site can change.2
Before you apply
You must be at least 21 and hold a valid Hong Kong ID. A parent or guardian at the same address can apply for someone younger. Bring proof of your residential address. If you live in a building with pet restrictions, settle that question first: SPCA follows Housing Authority rules and may ask for written confirmation from building management. It can also inspect the home.
Do not choose from a photo alone. At the centre, spend time with the dog and ask staff about its health, temperament and care needs. If you already have a dog, SPCA may ask you to bring it for an introduction. Everyone at home should be prepared to live with the dog, not simply approve a picture.
Visit → apply → collect
- Visit and apply in person. Staff assess the match using your housing, household, existing pets, experience, available time and interaction with the dog. A second visit may be needed.
- Send the requested documents promptly. SPCA may request proof of address, other supporting material, evidence of equipment or a home visit.
- Watch for a decision. SPCA contacts successful applicants. If you hear nothing within seven days, treat the application as unsuccessful. If staff leave a voicemail, return it within 24 hours or they may move to another applicant.
- Book collection. The adoption procedure usually takes one to two hours. Complete the agreement, pay the fees and collect the dog within the period SPCA agrees with you.
An unsuccessful application does not mean you can never adopt there; SPCA decides each match in the animal’s interests. Its decision is final.
Other membership choices and future care
First-time adopters who prefer life membership can pay HK$2,500 individually or HK$4,000 for a family at SPCA’s adoption discount.1
The adoption fee contributes to veterinary care across SPCA’s animals. It is not a promise that every dog has received the same treatment, or that future treatment is covered.
