Hong Kong living with dogs

Dog training in Hong Kong: pick the right class or private trainer

Start with the problem: puppy manners, a home routine or a frightened dog. Six Hong Kong services, current published fees and the questions to ask before paying.

Choose the lesson around the problem. A puppy that can settle near other dogs may suit a group class. Barking at your building lift calls for practice there. A frightened dog or one with a bite history needs private assessment and a safety plan; sudden behaviour change or pain calls for a vet first.

Prices checked 25 September 2026 where published. A blank price is not a free service; it means the provider asks for an enquiry. Compare the total programme, not a single session against a multi-lesson package.

Four questions before paying

  1. What will happen at my actual trigger? Describe the lift, lobby or pavement and any bite or near miss. Ask whether the trainer comes there.
  2. Who teaches, in which language, and with what equipment? Ask for the named trainer and a clear explanation of collars, leash handling and rewards. We would choose a reward-based plan.
  3. What does the total include? Get sessions, travel, written notes, follow-up, cancellation and refund terms in one quote.
  4. What must I practise between lessons? The household needs a plan it can repeat in a Hong Kong flat and on daily walks.

SPCA’s group course needs vaccination records; the first lesson is usually theory without the dog. Tell them before booking if your dog cannot stay comfortable near others. For a dog that bites, freezes, panics or suddenly behaves differently, book a registered vet where medical causes may be involved and tell the trainer the history. Do not use a group class to force exposure.

Source notes

  1. SPCA course schedule and fees and Island Kennel rates checked 25 September 2026. Other providers publish service format but require direct quotes. Availability and travel coverage need reconfirmation.
  2. Credential descriptions in provider biographies are provider claims, not a guarantee of a particular lesson outcome. For the training approach, see AVSAB’s position statements and AFCD dog-care guidance.
