SPCA dog dining etiquette workshop: the skills that mattered beyond April 2026

A recap of the 19 April workshop and a practical restaurant-settling routine for Hong Kong's new dog-friendly dining era.

A dog settled beside a restaurant table in Hong Kong

SPCA scheduled a dog dining etiquette workshop on 19 April 2026 as Hong Kong prepared for approved food premises to admit dogs. The class has passed, but the underlying skills now matter every week.

Dog-friendly dining is not “put the dog under the table and hope.” It is a chain of small behaviours: enter without rushing, settle on a defined mat, ignore dropped food, let staff pass, and leave before stress becomes barking or lunging.

Practise before booking brunch

Start at home. Reward the dog for lying on a mat while you move chairs, carry plates and drop a low-value distraction. Build from two quiet minutes to a realistic meal. Then practise at an outdoor table during an off-peak hour before attempting a busy indoor room.

Use a lead no longer than 1.5 metres where required, held by an adult or secured only as the premises permits. Keep the dog off tables and chairs. Bring its own water bowl and do not use reusable human utensils for pet food.

Choose the restaurant as carefully as the dog

Check the current FEHD permission and the branch’s own rules. Ask where dog tables are, whether bookings are required, how many dogs are accepted per table, and whether large or regulated breeds face restrictions. A listing from last month does not override a notice at the door today.

Find the next class

The archived 19 April workshop listing confirms this intake. SPCA’s dog behaviour and training page carries current schedules. If your dog cannot settle around food or passing dogs, a controlled class is a better first outing than a full restaurant.
